I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND

I just don't understand how fully capable young men can justify playing video games - while their father is outside doing yard work.

It isn't about 'being fair' or whose turn it is. It's about respect and compassion for each other - extending a helping hand or physical time to an older person - just because....it's the right thing to do.

I remember the days when a young man would feel distressed if he disappointed his father. I remember the days when a young man would feel pride in himself that he chose to help out - instead of meeting his own needs. I remember when 'work first and play second' really meant just that.

I just don't understand - when it all changed.

Weird. I was thinking these same thoughts after talking to my parents tonight. And, thinking guilty thoughts about living too far away to help them with yard work, flower gardens, etc. We're supposed to grow up and help our parents (the ND way) - it's hard for me to no be there. Thanks for sharing your blog with me :).

I know... it is a different time for kids nowadays. Too much free time and conveniences become the necessity - not the luxury.

The ND way (and Eastern Montana way) was purposeful living first and fun second.

Work ethic is such a basic character need - but not emphasized enough anymore.

Soooo, in the end - the young men were told - no one sits down until Dad sits down; one young man finished the weed eating and the other made supper...and Dad was able to rest after a long week away.
